It was never mentioned in the manga, but in the anime Yajirobe ask where's Trunks tail, and Bulma answers that they aborted it, it's in episode 111 I think... For ttttttttttttthe others, come on? Goten - 7 years we dunno about, Pan - 4 years... Theyyyyyyyyyyyyy could have done the same, or in pans case she might were born without since shes only 25% saying... Ssorry for those letters which came more then once, My keyboard is wierd... |

I would guess that it was removed at birth |

Maybe the tail began disappearing genetictly and because of the gaps between Gohan and the others birth... Its just like evolution where you became a "better" version of your ancestors each generation... That might have happened to Pan but I don't quite know with Goten... Chi Chi might have removed it since she hates Saiyans... Just like when Goten was told never to go Super Saiyan right after his mom saw it... |

They were probably removed at birth... Krillin asks Bulma about Trunks' tail in the manga (And maybe anime) but she doesn't answer him. |

I would assume it's removal at birth. For Pan maybe it's because she's a 1/8th saiyan and that makes it harder to have a tail? |

^^1/4. Birth removal/no tail at birth are my opinions. Really seem like the only possibilites. |
Now, there's an idea. | |

since gohan was born with a tail, simple logic states that both goten and trunks should have been born with one as well. theirs were probably removed at birth to avoid accidental oozaru transformations, or to eliminate that weakness. pan has a 50% chance of being born with a tail, since gohan only has 1 copy of the "tail gene", there is only a 50% chance of him passing it on to any child of his. each generation after pan has 1/2 as much chance as the generation before of any individual having a tail. |

list of canon sources: the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga. list of non canon sources: everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality. for those that blindly follow word of god

You see only one example of a tail from offspring hybrids. I don't see how you can use that to say that since Gohan had a tail, everyone else should too that are half saiyans. That's like saying every half saiyan should have ridiculous hidden powers like Gohan as well. For all we know, Gohan had a tail, and Goten did not, giving it a 50/50 shot. If we look at our genetics that we learned in Jr. High, then we can see that the tail is the dominant trait, therefore having a 100% chance of showing up (in the phenotype.) So, if that's where you're coming from, lunar, I understand. However, you must consider that these are different SPECIES, which throws a new twist on things. |

i'm going from basic mendelian genetics. gohan had 1 copy of the gene, and had the tail, so everyone with one copy of the gene will have the tail. however, since every saiyan we see had a tail, saiyans naturally have 2 copies, or else there would occasionally be tailless saiyans, which there aren't, as far as we know. so, goku and vegeta both have 2 copies. every child they have will therefore have one copy. every halfbreed has a 50% chance of passing the gene to any individual offspring, so ~1/2 of second generation hybrids will have tails. this process repeats indefinitely, with 3rd generation having 25% chance of having a tail, 4th generation having a 12.5% chance of having a tail, etc. etc. |

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. My "Jr. High Genetics" was mendelian genetics. Like I said, I understood after I thought about that. Not sure about dominant and recessive when it comes to breeding between different species. |

I think it would depend how strong the gene is! Saiyan genes would proably be more dominant! |

i've actualy thought about this, and i figured that since there is no gene for tails in human DNA, then, nomatter what percentage saiyan you are, since there is no dominate and resessive gene, then the kid should always have a tail. anyway, i highly dought that vegeta wanted trunks' tail removed, but bulma probaly insisted. and for goten, without goku around, the last thing chi-chi would want is her son turning into a giant ape every full moon. not to mention that she wouldnt want him to look like a freak. and gohan and videl probaly didnt want to worry about pan going oozaru. |

Krillin makes me laugh. Goku makes me cheer. Vegeta makes me scream. Gohan makes me gasp. And Piccolo makes me shut up. Spoiler: click to toggle

I agree. Bulma probably insisted and Vegeta was off in space when Trunks was off in space so poor Trunks had no chance of keeping his tail. Chi-Chi didn't want Goten turning into an Oozaru. Gohan and Videl probably wanted Pan to be as normal as possible. |
